EMOTIONAL CONCERT LEFT A SENSE OF CALM

It's always a delight to hear the London Mozart Players and this performance, under the wonderful direction of Hilary Davan Wetton, presented us with a concert of two halves.

Accompanying the orchestra was the Leicester Philharmonic Choir and the first item was Haydn's motet Insanae et vanae Curae, a lovely work showing strong emotion.

Martin Roscoe was the soloist in Mozart's piano concerto number 21 in C major, K467.

This pianist gave us a virtuoso account of this well known concerto, particularly the cadenzas. He played with deftness and delicacy, displaying great empathy with the piece.

The second half was Brahms's German Requiem. This is not a requiem in the strict sense of the word but a musical setting of various texts from the Lutheran Bible connected with death and consolation.

The music is so beautiful, particularly the gorgeous How Lovely Are Thy Dwellings.

Soloists here were Cecilia Osmond (soprano) and Stephen Roberts (baritone), whose performances were most moving.

Choir and orchestra were well balanced and there were many lush, ethereal moments.

There was careful preparation with good ensemble and great diversity of dynamics, and fugal passages were treated with precision.

The comforting final movement left us with a sense of calm.
