LEICESTER PHILHARMONIC CHOIR

A Concert of Celebration, DE MONTFORT HALL, SAT 11 MAY 2002

REVIEW by NEIL CRUTCHLEY

THE QUEEN’S golden jubilee and the centenaries of both Walton and Duruflé were celebrated at this concert, which deserved a far larger audience than it received.

The programme was attractive and the standard of performance very impressive.

The ‘Phil’ is smaller now but no less capable. The singing was stylish, alert and particularly well-balanced.

Conductor Ronald Corp drew a rhythmic response from the outset with a rousing account of Walton’s Jubilate Deo.

The style changed for two of Handel’s Coronation Anthems: The King Shall Rejoice and Zadok the Priest. This was a joyful, buoyant performance.
